'Tis The Season

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

As 2009 rolls in so does a new indoor season. I've opened up on a good note and look to keep going full steam ahead! My first meet of the season was the Virginia Tech Invite in Blacksburg, VA. It was a pretty fun meet for me because I had the opportunity to interact with a lot of young athletes and see some old friends at the same time. I wasn't really expecting big numbers from this competition because it is so early in the season, but that's not exactly how it turned out. I ended up throwing my 20lb. weight 23.73m (77ft10.25in) which is a world leading mark right now. Not only that, but its also farther than I threw last year at the USA Indoor Championships! My friend and former coach Carrie Lane shot video of the competition so here is the winning throw:

My next competition will be the Millrose Games in New York City on January 30. It is a part of the Visa Series that ends with the USA Indoor Championships in Boston on February 28-March 1. So sign up for the automatic emails and when I update the site, you'll be in the loop! Thanks for staying on this crazy ride with me. This season's going to full of fun and excitement!

Peace and Blessings,

Amber

Throws Information

Throwing formats
In Olympic throwing events -- men's and women's shot put, discus, hammer and javelin -- the competition begins with a qualifying round in which the entire field is divided into two or more groups. In this round, competitors take turns attempting to reach a pre-set distance that automatically advances them to the final. If fewer than 12 athletes meet the distance required from direct qualification, the 12 competitors with the best throws, plus any athletes tying for 12th, advance to the final. In the final round, competitors take turns until each has attempted three throws. At this point, the top eight-ranked competitors (plus ties) receive three more throws. The best throw of the six is counted and the athlete with the longest throw is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the second-best throw is consulted.
